The exhibition will present the activities of two progressive studios of the Department of Applied Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava – the Glass studio, led by Patrik Illo, and the STUDIO S+M+L_XL – METAL AND JEWEL, led by Karol Weisslechner.

The “glass” part of the exhibition, planned in Zlín, will map the development of the VŠVU Glass studio since 2010, when it was headed by doc. M.Sc. Art. Patrick Illo. During that time, the archive of the studio has concentrated many works of students, which are not only valuable documents of the educational process in P. Ill’s concept, but especially insight into the possibilities of applying glass design and art in the contemporary world.

The studio focuses on teaching in the areas of design and liberal arts. It builds on the knowledge of glass technologies that students acquire both in school workshops, but also directly in the operations of top manufacturers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Glass is a material tied to a centuries-old history of craft tradition, but with an open potential to currently receive and process the stimuli of contemporary art and design. The teaching program is also built in this sense – after mastering glass technologies, to direct future graduates to the design profession or liberal arts, i.e. two positions that frame the discipline of glass.

The studio S+M+L_XL – KOV A SPERK is the only one of its kind in Slovakia and belongs to the youngest studios at VŠVU. The name of the studio S+M+L_XL – METAL AND JEWELRY derives from the size designations, which express the philosophy of broad-spectrum action and the focus of teaching from small jewelry artifacts to the design of industrially realizable objects of large-scale work to specific architectural spaces. The studio in the individual teaching program provides the best conditions for the development of the student’s creative personality so that he can develop his talent and creative abilities to the full extent and later be a successful artist or designer in practice.
